Creativity Trends and Cool Hunting

Accademia Montenapoleone 5 (the first real world fashion Academy to get a Second Life) would like to announce the beginning of fashion oriented classes held in Second Life by the Academy's teachers, all of which are accomplished professionals in the real world fashion field.
The first public class will be held on Tuesday, April the 8th, 2008, at 8:00 PM GMT (12:00 PM PDT SL time) and will be held by Prof. Manuela Rubertelli (in her Avatar form Mikado Rubble). The class subject will be Creativity Trends and Cool Hunting, Spring/Summer 2009. At the end of the speech there will be a Q&A session for everyone interested in further clarification and discussion.
The class will be held in English language and is open to everyone that would like to attend, for free. Especially encouraged to attend are Second Life designers and fashion professionals that would like to broaden their knowledge of Real World fashion and gather inspiration for their upcoming creations.
To attend the class just teleport to the Accademia Montenapoleone 5 Classroom at this SLURL: slurl.com/secondlife/Montenapoleone/80/72/23
Make sure to turn on your streaming audio by pressing the play button on the bottom right of your screen, so that you'll be able to hear the speech by the teacher.
The class will be moderated by the Academy's Administrator in Second Life, Shiryu Musashi. Any enquiries about it and about further classes can be directed to him via IM.
Also, to receive timely info about classes and other initiatives by the Accademia Montenapoleone 5, you can freely join the "Accademia Montenapoleone 5 Update" group, that will be used to spread such news.

Path Cut? Hollow? Shear?

If you don't know what all these terms mean, consider taking a building class.
I recently dropped in on an ASL class called "Building Rustic Covered Wagons" taught by Sunn Thunders. The students were spread out around the instructor, who gave them easy to follow step-by-step directions:

Sunn Thunders: Change the SIZE of this box to X=4.5, Y=2.5, and Z=0.2. Lower this piece into the bottom of the sideboards to form the floor of the bed.
Look for the BUILDING BLOCK TYPE under the right side of the Object tab in the Build window. Change the BUILDING BLOCK TYPE to CYLINDER using the pop-up menu.
Next, HOLLOW this cylinder to 95 to make it as thin as possible.
Now for some fancy magic...
We are going to reshape this cylinder further by cutting part of it away.
Look for the PATH CUT under the right side of the Object tab in the Build window. Change the PATH CUT to B=0.15 and E=0.85. Watch how a portion of the cylinder gets cut away.
Look for the TOP SHEAR under the right side of the Object tab in the Build window. Change the TOP SHEAR as follows: X=0.5. Watch as one side of the cylinder gets pulled off center.

I watched as plywood boxes became covered wagons all around the building area. Its fascinating to realize that YOU have the power to create just about anything. Take a class—learn some new skills.
Sunn Thunders teaches for the Academy of Second Learning (ASL), but there are plenty of classes around.

appearance part one

The very basic basics.........

Yes i know everyone went through tutorial island, quick as possible and probably took very little notice of how to sort out your appearance.
I have met a few long term members who still have no idea how to even colour a bought item, never mind actually make their own clothing.
So this guide is here to help - even if you are not new to SL - maybe you will find some of this helpful.

1 HAIR

OK step one, how do we get rid of the dreaded hat? Or that awful newbie hair we start with?
You know it took me a week to discover i could buy hair?
Then I couldn't get rid of the hair underneath the prim hair?

How to wear and adjust prim hair

Its one of those things in SL that is simple when you know totally confusing when you don't!
If you buy or find freebie hair most comes with a bald cap/base this is what you need to wear first!
Drag your box onto the floor (rez in world) then right click and 'OPEN'
Copy contents to your inventory, check the items are actually in your inventory (usually in a folder) and delete the box on the ground.
go to the folder and click to open it,
wear the bald cap/base
then right click the little box icon and click 'WEAR'
hey presto you are now wearing your new hair! (without the embarrassing newbie hair underneath)

Doesn't look right? hair too small/big? too high/ low?
OK once you are wearing prim hair you need to learn to either adjust it or your shape to fit.
Prim hair tends to come in 3 sizes so you need to make your head fit the hair, although you can make the hair larger/smaller too.
Look at your shape first and decide which needs to be changed your shape or the hair?
You decided the hair.....
right click on the hair
click 'EDIT'
you should see 3 coloured arrows appear and a pop up menu
the arrows will allow you to reposition the hair, click on the up/down or left/ right arrow and while holding the mouse button down, drag the hair up or down as needed, You need to be close up so zoom in to your face to see clearly where the hair needs to sit.
The hair is too big/small?
This is a little trickier if you haven't ever edited anything in SL before:
Look at the popped up menu and locate the little check boxes, by default the 'POSITION' box is checked, you need to find the 'STRETCH' box and check it.
Once you have done that 4 small white cubes should appear around your new hair
click on one of these and while holding the mouse button down drag the cube out or in depending on whether you need to make the hair larger or smaller.
Once it looks about the right size you may need to reposition the hair - check the 'POSITION' box on the pop up menu again and the arrows should reappear. Then adjust as needed.
Close the edit box.
This may take a little practice and a few tries to get it looking good, but stick with it and it will be well worth the frustration and lip biting.
Congratulations you are now wearing prim hair that fits.
On some prim hair you can also recolour but more about this in the next basic lesson.............
